The tail of the fish, however, is carved into a flattened human head in which the eyes are inlaid with fish vertebrae and obsidian. The ears are drilled for inlay, but this is | x See reverse | Dimensions (in cm): | Length: 48.8 | Width: 10.6 | Height: | Circumference: | Diameter: | Fuller Collection: Purchased from Captain A.W.F. Fuller of London, England, in 1958. | P.H. Edmunds 1907. [BACK] absent. The head of the fish has eyes that are also inlaid with fish vertebrae and obsidian. The surface of the carving (the body of the fish) has raised bird/man-like figures on both sides. Each figure has a hole drilled for inlay pieces, but most of the inlay has been lost. An altogether different type of carving from this island and probably not of the earliest workmanship. Fuller seemed to feel it (and CNHM 273242) had been made around 1850. Metal tools do not appear to have been used. A hole perforated through the specimen appears at the backbone forward of mid-point. Through this a short loop of native twisted fiber is drawn. | 273243
