Description: scan of catalog card [FRONT] [MAIN BODY] FIELD MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY. [ written in blue ] Ind | Country China. Masks. 1. Drama Ta siang shan | Locality Peking [Chinese] | People Chinese. 54B - 5/03 Stock. | Name Stage bacjground in 11 pieces painted on cloth, depicting the island of Pu - to shan, the seat of the goddess Kuan - yin. This small rocky isle in the Chousan Archipelago off Ning-po is entirely devoted to the worship of the goddess kuan-yin whose life-size imaage is there set up, entirely carved from jade. The island is one of the most beautiful spots in the east where nature and architecture vie with each other and are felicitously blended into an harmonious unit. An ideal representation of it forms the picturesque stage scenery of this religious drama. The island is densely populated by birds, serving at the same time as lanterns, a candle being stuck into the spike. During the performance, the whole background id illuminated, which lends the scene a magical effect. ( This information taken from old labels) | Collection Mrs. T. B.
