This kind of vessel is made in three different communities of Pokomam speakers in the northern Valley of Guatemala: Sacojito, Durazno (including Arenales and surrounding area) and Chinautla. Each community makes them with a slightly different surface/paste distinction. This particular vessel is from the aldea of Sacojito, and was also made for little girls so that they could learn how to carry water. Unlike water-carrying vessels in Yucatán, these vessels have a rounded base formed from using the base of an old pot, and for carrying; the vessels are placed on a pad on the head for support. , This vessel is painted in the style of Durazno water carrying jars, but was made in Sacojito. Women from Durazno married men from Sacojito and then moved in with their husbands to Sacojito, but still making pottery in the style of their community or origin. Although this vessel lacks precise provenience because it was collected for my personal collection of pots, it is easily identifiable as being from Sacojito rather than Durazno because the Durazno potters use a carbonaceous clay, and then use a white slip with read decoration, but their firing technique is not sufficient to burn out all of the carbonaceous matter out of the clay, and leaves a black core. This vessel does not appear to have a black core and it appears that it was not made with carbonaceous lay.","clay (ceramic), paint","Pokomam","","","","","",""," https://fm-digital-assets.fieldmuseum.org/558/527/RG0000_355124_OverallSide.jpg"
